In Alabama, the Republican-led state legislature redrew the 2nd Congressional District, aiming to secure a safer seat for their party. This district was one of only two in the state represented by a Democrat.

The changes came after the U.S. Supreme Court weakened the Voting Rights Act earlier this year. Representative Shomari Figures, a Black Democrat, anticipated he would be targeted by the redistricting.

The redrawing was intended to make it easier for Republicans to win the district. However, Figures is prepared to challenge the new boundaries and continue representing his constituents.

This situation highlights ongoing tensions in Alabama politics, especially regarding voting rights and fair representation.
