NYC Council to review earlier Legionella reporting rules

The New York City Council is preparing to discuss a new bill aimed at improving public health safety. The proposed law would require owners of cooling towers to report Legionella bacteria levels to city health officials at a lower threshold than currently mandated.

This change comes after recent deadly Legionella outbreaks in the Bronx, which raised concerns about timely detection and response. By lowering the reporting threshold, health authorities hope to intervene sooner and reduce the risk of infections.

The bill is scheduled for a hearing on Monday. If passed, it will strengthen monitoring of water systems in the city and help prevent future outbreaks linked to Legionella bacteria.
